Sheung Wan Tour(1)

The first station is Wing Lok Street (commonly known as the Ginseng and Bird's nest street)You can see that there are a lot of leon light signs which are part of Hong Kong street culture!

When you walk down Wing Lok Street and Bonham Strand, two small alleys in Sheung Wan, you will see an array of stores selling dried seafood, high end tonics and traditional medicine recipes. This place have another alternative name-South North Store.

The original decorations, aging owners and friendly staff can tell their long stories and illustrious history. They are really nice who allow us to bring the tourist to visit the shop!

Do you know what is the use the above brown container. It actually helps select out different sizes of ginger and divided into several categories. They will be sold at different prices.

Kathy is now leading the tourist!!!

Look! We are having a lot of fun!
The gold stuff which emits golden light actually represents an abalone!

WOW!We want to eat all the bird's nest!We must become even more beautiful!

haha! I am asking the shopkeeper the use of the medicine.Guess what?It function is to cure respiratory problems. But we have to be aware that the eyes of the tokay gecko. It is toxic! Yet, the appearance of it is soooooooo scary.I had better try other medicine!XD

The next station is Des Voeux Road West. Here you will see some one dried seafood shop after another.
Half a century ago, this place is known as 'Salty Fish Hood' since most of the shops sold salty fish.In those days, the buildings had a shop on the ground floor, accommodation for staff on the first floor and a drying area on the roof.

This place provides a feast for your eyes and nose as you pass by.Be aware that you may not be really familiar with this smell! This is absolutely unforgettable.

The oysters are ready to be served only after 2days until they are completely dried by sunlight.

'OMG!Is it a real deer?'asked by the tourist. We tried to ask the shopkeeper.Yet , he refused to answer us.Well, we guess this is probably a deer specimen. It is so cute. However, it is of a high medical value. This explains this why it is killed.Poor!

Sheung Wan Tour(2)-the reflection part

As we are all new in leading a tour, we face quite a lot of challenges. After the tour, we did some reflection and evaluation. We hope that if were granted a chance to lead a tour again, we will do much better.

Difficulties
1.When doing this project, we have to explore the culinary heritage of Hong Kong and compare the urban development and heritage conservation in rural areas.Based on this purpose, we have to do a lot research, not only Sheung Wan,but also other rural areas in order to compare them.

2.All of our group members are really young.Seldom do we have any chances to buy dried seafood ,not to mention knowing the method to choose them. So, we have to do a lot of research and ask the owners.

3.When planning the tour, we have contacted the owners of the shops to see if they allow us to visit their shops and provide us a short lecture. However, most of them turned down the request.

4.It is the first time that we led a tour, so we might feel a little bit nervous. While introducing the shops, we have to care about the feeling of tourists.

Lessons learnt
1.First of all, not all of us participated the tour led by Professor Sidney Cheung. So, not everyone of the member got to know the places in Sheung Wan. We have to refer to a lot of websites, TV programs. This really surprises us that there are a lot of resources in the internet.

2.In this project, we have experienced to be a tourist guide. Being a tourist guide is no way a easy job.We are just like doing a talk show, adding some funny stories while introducing the spots. This helps arouse the interest of the tourists.

3.In this project, we have to create a blog to upload our photos and video. This is actually a trend of promoting tourism. We have developed a sense to fully utilize the new technology.
